A few years ago, someone asked me, “How many books do you own?”
I answered proudly, “Around a hundred.”
They looked at me with genuine concern and said,
“Have you actually read all of them?”
I laughed and replied, “Most of them.”
They paused for a second and then said something I’ll never forget:
“What’s the point of keeping books you’ve already finished?”
For a moment, I didn’t know how to answer.
Because to a reader, that’s like asking, “Why keep family photos after you’ve seen them once?”
Books aren’t just stories. They’re memories of different versions of ourselves.
Some remind us of difficult days we survived.
Some bring back the excitement of discovering a favorite character.
Some quietly wait on the shelf until we’re ready to understand them differently.
The funny part?
A few months later, that same friend borrowed one of my books.
Then another.
Then another.
Now they’re the one texting me at midnight asking, “What should I read next?” ๐
It’s amazing how a single book can turn curiosity into a lifelong habit.
